Somatic Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy sessions can offer a restorative space to slow down and step away from the pressures of everyday life, and spend time in relationship with the natural world. We can remember something that can be easy to lose touch with in the busyness of modern life: that we are part of nature, not separate from it. Ecotherapy offers an opportunity to create spaciousness around whatever we are carrying and to find perspective if there are challenging experiences. It may support us with stress, anxiety, emotional overwhelm or difficult emotions, grief or disconnection or depression, while also offering space to explore our sense of meaning in our lives. Mostly, ecotherapy sessions don’t involve a lot of conversation, but offer a space to ‘be’ and allow things to unfold.

Sessions are grounded in nature connection and informed by somatic ecotherapy, bringing awareness to both the outer landscape and our own inner landscape. We may walk, sit, pause, listen, notice, explore and spend time with the other-than-human world.

There is no particular way you need to experience or connect with nature. We follow what feels supportive for you, with space for curiosity, choice, intuition and your own inner wisdom.

I bring a trauma-aware approach to these sessions, with gentle and playful invitations rather than expectations. We may explore what happens in your body as you spend time in nature: your breathing, sensations, emotions, thoughts and nervous system responses. We can notice how the natural world affects us and what it might be inviting us to notice, without needing there to be a particular outcome. Often nature whispers with meaning, insight or a deeply supportive presence during sessions.

Ecotherapy may support you to:

  • slow down and create a sense of spaciousness
  • feel more grounded, present and connected
  • find acceptance, understanding or meaning for what’s difficult
  • support nervous system regulation and settling
  • develop greater awareness of your body, emotions and needs
  • explore stress, anxiety or emotional overwhelm
  • make space for grief and difficult emotions
  • reconnect with a sense of aliveness, curiosity, play and joy
  • explore meaning, wholeness and belonging
  • remember your relationship with nature and the other-than-human world
  • have a sense of your own place within the living web of life

What might a session involve?

Each session will be shaped around what feels supportive for you. It might include:

  • mindful walking and nature connection practices
  • slowing down and noticing the natural world through the senses
  • body awareness and somatic practices
  • breath and nervous system regulation practices
  • sitting or resting quietly in nature
  • exploring feelings, thoughts, sensations or images that arise
  • reflective conversation and gentle therapeutic enquiry
  • practices of listening and connecting with the land
  • exploring your relationship with nature, belonging and the wider web of life
  • simply being outdoors, with no particular task or goal

There is no need to know how to “do” ecotherapy. You don’t need to be knowledgeable about nature, physically fit, or experienced in connecting with nature. You are welcome just as you are.

I am there to guide and accompany you, creating space for you to listen to your own body, your own inner guidance and your relationship with the natural world.

Sometimes healing begins with slowing down and noticing that we are already part of something much larger than ourselves.
